What is remote computer repair?

Having to lug your computer to a local computer company might not be possible for everyone; not to mention that the local computer repair company might not meet up to your standards. There also might be a friend or family member that would know exactly how to fix your system, but they might live miles away. So what do you do when you are stuck with a predicament such as this? Luckily there is a process called remote computer repair.

Remote computer repair tools allow you to view and control someone’s computer desktop over the internet. This allows the technician to perform maintenance, install programs, or help out with any problem that is occurring on your computer. To perform remote computer repair services, it requires configurations on both ends.

Operating systems by Microsoft®, Apple® and Linux® each have the capability to engage a type of remote desktop software. Another option would be a third party software. Symantec®’s PCAnywhere®, is one of the more popular programs used but this is a sophisticated program geared towards remote network administration.

For family and friends, VNC™ Free, or a paid flavor like VNC Personal Edition would be more practical. Here too, the remote party would still need to configure software before you could connect. The easiest remote computer repair method is to use a Web-based service, although this solution requires installing a small program on the computer you want to control, the installation is hassle-free and does not require configuration.

Many people stay connected on the phone while they are remoting into a computer. This way, incase anything happens on someone’s end there is still a connection. Remote computer repair is a great tool that can save time, money and hassle.

Although most computer repair companies will charge for remote service, it tends to still be less expensive than taking it into the store.  Even if the computer is just a few blocks away, when you remotely fix it you can work on it whenever it’s convenient for, even if that’s in the middle of the night.
